History

In the winter of 1988, Steve Schmidt and Robert Launsby conducted a two-day Design of Experiments training session at Texas Instruments (TI) in Austin Texas. They were shown a catapult-like throwing device by their host, Ledi Trudna. She was making use of the device to teach control charting and variance reduction techniques.

With assistance from Gary Fenton (a skilled wood worker and mechanical engineer), Steve and Bob modified the TI design for use as a training device in experimental design. Steve used the device in a series of short courses conducted around the country for BBN Software products. Robert Launsby promoted the use of the device at Digital Equipment and other early adopters of Six Sigma technology. Ledi conducted public short courses on using the Catapult during the early 1990's. Later it became a standard for Six Sigma (DMAIC) training around the world.
